The Motherhood

To My Dearest Little Ally, On Your Wedding Day

Today you are getting married. Isn’t that weird? I feel like I woke up five minutes ago and we’re suddenly all grown up. It marks the next stage of your life, creating a new family of your own. It’s a whole new chapter of your life, just beginning.

There was a song ten years ago about sunscreen,

Be nice to your siblings, they’re your best link to your past
And the people most likely to stick with you in the future

I haven’t been very nice to you, in the past. You haven’t been very nice to me. If there’s anyone in the World I’ve said “I hate you” to the most, its you my dear I’m afraid – not even our poor Mother although she does come a close second.

I have pinched you, I have told on you. I have envied you, I have judged you. I have laughed with you, cried with you, drunk obscene quantities of wine with you. I have stuck up for you, I have admired you.

You have been greatest enemy, my dearest little ally.

I consider you often when contemplating having a second child. Are only children lonely? I wouldn’t know. Do they miss out on a lifelong companion, one whose childhood runs parallel with their own? Someone whose coming from the same place they are?

It would have been a terrible thing to not have had a sister, a lot of my memories are your memories. Where I forget, you remember. It’s something that only we can share, you and I.

Thank God I had someone to play with, someone to go on holiday with. Someone to wind up, someone to steal clothes from. It would have been very lonely without you.

I don’t have any good advice I’m afraid, as a wife, as a mother and as a person – I’m still clueless and making it up as I go along. If there’s one thing I’ve learnt about life its that no one actually knows what they are doing, you just have to make choices and hope for the best.

I think you have made great choices and should expect the best.

So lets carry on being nice to each other, and stick with each other in the future. We’ll have our own families, we’ll make different choices, we wont always agree. But I like you, you’re a great friend and this part of your life has just begun. I’m excited for you, for your future.

Congratulations, we all love you very much.

PS. I read your diary once, it was fascinating.
