Last week, when Summer gave itself a little break and Finley wasn’t feeling too well. We decided to abandon all hope of our usual Tuesday routine and gift ourselves a duvet day. We sacked off Pre-school, ignored all the emails and stayed home in our PJ’s hiding from the wind and rain. It was actually a really nice day, just the two of us and what do two people having a duvet day need the most?
Well, cake of course!
We’d been lucky enough to have been sent a baking kit from Craft + Crumb and it was the perfect stay at home activity! Finley had been asked to choose a cake of his choice from their amazing range and opted for The Race Track Kit. I was really keen on the Enchanted Fairy Garden but cars are the obsession of the moment, so I had to relent and as it turned out he made an excellent choice!
Before we go any further, I’ve got to point out that this is by no means a food or baking blog (ha! as if you didn’t realise!). Whilst I can cook to an intermediate/ reasonably acceptable level – Mary Berry I is not. So at first, the idea of taking on a huge stylised cake was a bit daunting. However, as soon as I opened the box I felt a lot better!
First off, everything you need is there. Every ingredient and every decoration, right down to the food colouring and cake pans are in that blessed box! The only stuff you need is your basic equipment (bowls, mixers etc) and the usual fresh ingredients (eggs, butter, milk) that they obviously can’t post out to you. There is no measuring, no weighing and no washing up cake tins!
The best bit however is the step by step guide. They take you through each stage and you do not need to be a master baker to get good results! We baked and decorated our cake throughout the course of the day and it was easy to let my three year old get fully involved and yet still end up with a decent looking cake by the end of it. We also had a lot of fun together and he was really proud of what he had made!
Craft + Crumb baking kits take the stress out of baking for big occasions. All the mixes are made with unrefined organic flour and each kit can also be offered as a gluten free mix.
I’ve got a fab competition running this week to win one of their Biscuit Kits. The winner can choose from either the Rocket Pop Kit or the Fairy Wand Kit. Each box makes 10-15 biscuits and includes everything you need, except a few eggs.
