A Boy and His Cat

So if you follow me on Twitter or Instagram you’ll know that we adopted another cat last week, by mistake.

One evening a little black kitten ventured into our kitchen and helped herself to someone else’s dinner. We let her eat and then my husband scooped her up and went knocking on doors to find out who she belonged to. There were no takers. A couple of neighbours said she had been around for a few days and they had been feeding her scraps but no one knew about a lost  kitten.

This all went on until around 8 o’clock with no results, so we took her back inside, dug out some of Finley’s weaning bowls and gave her more food and water. I fashioned a make shift litter tray out of a tin tray meant for cooking turkeys (I’m so creative, maybe I should post on Pinterest after all!) and this little thing made herself at home.
There was no hiding, no crying, no trying to get back out. Just happy as anything, playing with our toddler and sleeping on our sofa like she’d always been here.

Now you need to know that at this stage we had no intention of keeping her, we already have two cats and we didn’t think they’d take too kindly to an intruder. We assumed any minute someone would come knocking, desperately trying to find her and we’d just keep her safe for a bit until they arrived.

In the meantime we tried to keep her contained in the living room by blocking the stair gate but she soon jumped over and came to face to face with our existing cats, Arnie and Millie. She was met with two surprised and confused middle aged cats who gave her some pretty intimidating growls. She backed up immediately and they let it go.

She spent the night with us, mostly snuggled up in my hair. The big cats allowed her access to upstairs as long as she didn’t dare get anywhere near them.
The next day we had work and had no choice but to leave them to it. I popped home on my lunch break convinced I’d come home to the aftermath of a fight but all was well.

Over the last week, everyone in the house has become enamoured with this cat. She has definitely won us over. Our older cats have made their peace with it, they are already sharing furniture and food bowls with her. They like to watch her play with a piece of paper or a crayon and let her bump noses with them.
Finley has found a new best friend and is constantly talking about or asking for her. He takes his cars to her and finds it hilarious when she chases them. He gives her kisses and demands she comes into the bathroom when he’s having a bath!
He was the one who ended up naming her. We had been explaining to him that she is a kitten, a baby cat so he needs to be gentle with her. He called her Baby Cat, or in Finley speak ‘Bubby At’. So her name is now Bubby, which is quite sweet and cute whilst she’s this tiny little kitten but if she grows into some great big, monstrous cat I’m going to feel like a right knob shouting Bubby Bubby up the garden to get her in!

She’s been checked out by the Vet and her vaccinations started. We’ll also have to have her spayed in a couple of months. All in all this is going to cost us around £200, but we think she’s worth it.

oh I saw your tweet and I had to read this post, I love the name hubby too how cute. We have 3 cats, We were at the vet one day with our puppy and there were two little kittens that someone had dumped. The vet was caring for them and had vaccinated, flea treated and de-sexed them. We couldn’t resist and agreed to take one, but then we couldn’t leave the other one so we needed up with 2. Within 2 days one passed away due to surgery complications and so we ended up at an animal adoption centre and got another one. 2 months later I was at an animal shelter and fell for another stray. So yes we have 3 cats. No more!!!! But we love them.

    1. How can someone dump kittens? Glad they found you though! X

  3. Nothing like a kitty story with a happy ending to warm the heart and good on you for giving a home to a furbie in need. What a cutie. Good luck with 3 cats – good job they seem to get on – life with 2 is crazy enough.

Love a crazy cat lady x
